« on: 03 May, 2015, 08:00:15 PM »
The !insult command selects a random player and strings adjectives and a noun together (alternatively an entire phrase) to create a fun, lighthearted insult.

Unlike on Fig Fighters it will not contain any slurs or hateful speech as a significant amount of people would be bothered by them. Repeat: nothing that would be widely considered as offensive regardless of context.

Any player may easily disable or enable insults showing up in their chat by checking the F4 options menu. The setting is saved.

The insults look something like this:

Blog is a smelly dumb poop head.
or
Blog has a brown streak on his underwear.

Insults are just plain fun. Anyone who gets their feelings hurt if they see a word that they don't like should calm the fuck down. We're on Garry's Mod, not tumblr or reddit. People should stop being oversensitive pussies and have a laugh. For people who want to have FUN playing video games, it should be available, and for people with skin thinner than tissue paper, there's an option to turn it off like SirP said.

I'm indifferent, I'd use it occasionally if it was in though. I don't think there are many people that would be heavily offended by small insults, and if there are they can easily leave. I would suggest somehow implementing on how much someone can spam insult, like maybe 3 or 5 times.

The point isn't to make it so people want to leave though. There should be very few reasons for people wanting to leave.

I'm indifferent on the matter because good implementation would eliminate most of the problems.

I don't believe in attacking people for their opinion, but this is a special exception.

Just because it's the "internet" and "words" does not mean people won't have hurt feelings. It also doesn't mean that people are "weak" and need "thicker skin". All your post has achieved is highlighted your ignorance on the subject. Everybody has different ways of having fun, and there are legitimately people out there who have fun hurting others. I am not going to run a community filled with cyberbullies.

If I feel this is going to get out of hand, I will intervene and revoke it.

Sir P has argued his case already privately, and as I stated before, I'm pretty indifferent and it's all dependent on implementation. I would prefer to see a default option of off, and then players may enable if they wish. Sir P wishes to see the other way - where default on, and people can chose to turn it off. I believe that it could be something that scares people away and may give the wrong impressions, hence why off should be the default option.

I believe that it could be something that scares people away and may give the wrong impressions, hence why off should be the default option.

Since this is the place for an open community discussion, I'll elaborate on my opinion again here.

I can imagine this happening in a few cases, no doubt. People getting the wrong impressions I mean. They don't like it so they silently leave instead of offering any criticism or checking the options menu for a way to disable it. For the community to grow we need new people so obviously this isn't something that you'd want to happen. Even if only one person leaves over it, why leave it on by default? I'll give you my thoughts.

I believe that it will attract more players than drive away. It's no secret that the retention rate for random players is not particularly high. Most of the time they join and don't come back. There are other servers with much more novelty than ours with things like point shops and jihad bombs and 1HK knives that most people seem to prefer. It might not appear this way but in the grand scheme of things by striving for good weapon balance and focusing on quality over quantity we serve a niche, not the major audience. We should focus ensuring the appeal of the server for the sort of person that would stay instead of essentially watering it down. A server that ticks 10 boxes for a smaller group of people will do better than one that ticks only 5 for everyone, especially when there are many many other servers that do the same.

The idea of silly generated insult text driving a significant amount of people away from a server and community that they'd otherwise enjoy enough to be a regular member/player of is hard to believe for me. And in the event they do have a problem they have the option to disable it, fixing the issue permanently without hassle. I feel strongly that these concerns, given the lengths already gone through to serve both the people that love and dislike the feature, are exaggerated. I can't relate to them at all. I'd understand if we planned on having particularly offensive text such as racial slurs or really hateful language in general but what you see in the original post I made is more or less what you should expect. Harmless, goofy things that make you giggle because of how dumb they are. Things that you can freely say already and not be punished for.

I might not have done a good enough job of letting people know what to expect. I hope this clears things up.

Hm, I don't have a real strong opinion either way.  If I wanted to insult someone I could do it well enough on my own with a fancy command for it.  I don't think I'm the target audience for this feature :P

I think its a good idea, with valid opinions presented by SirP.

While TG has specific rules in place to avoid offending anyone, this is a generated random message,  and not likely to hurt anyone's feelings as a direct insult might.
I like the idea of being able to turn it off, if one desires, though.

Maybe instead of turning the insults off all together, a given user could opt not to be a target of an insult.

If I wanted to insult someone I could do it well enough on my own with a fancy command for it.

I don't think this is what SirP is aiming to achieve. This system of insults is not to be taken completely seriously. It's only for fun and humour, and it's purpose is not to be taken to heart. While typing out a witty insult yourself can do.

I think that everyone has taken this the way of harmful racial and mean slurs. If the insults that are going to be added are nothing more than harmless jabs, what could possibly go wrong? I mean if it's not anything along the lines of "___ is a stupid fag", then there shouldn't be a problem. If this system doesn't take insults to an extreme I see no problem in adding it. Having a harmless insult such as "___ wears a pink dress daily" is a lot less harmful than the one I said above.

I'm indifferent, I'd use it occasionally if it was in though. I don't think there are many people that would be heavily offended by small insults, and if there are they can easily leave. I would suggest somehow implementing on how much someone can spam insult, like maybe 3 or 5 times.
I feel like a cooldown of approximately ~20 seconds should be placed on such a command. Limiting how many times it can be used, to me, seems to make the command useless.

I have updated the original post and allowed for changing of votes in the thread's poll. You may update your vote to reflect your opinion if you wish.

After talking to some people it seems that they misinterpreted what I had said, thinking that it wouldn't be changed at all. Even ones that approved of it being unedited.

This is the direct list of the insults from fig. they are completely random. None of these are personalized or direct insults toward anyone. I still do not see how people can take these seriously. Some of these terms can be removed for obvious reasons; however this is just a playful option for people to spend points on.

"is gay Australian furry."

We're going to be starting the list over all over again, so it's unlikely many of those will be on there. You can see a few of those causing particularly sensitive players to be turned off. Things like that simply won't be coming back.
